The Feudal Fork: Why AI Makes America a Manor and China a Granary
AI is about to hand every industrial nation the same question. When machines produce the wealth, who owns the machines and who feeds the people? Most analysts expect a spectrum of answers. There is no spectrum. There are two exits. The United States is walking toward AI feudalism. China is walking toward universal basic income. Neither country is choosing. Each is obeying its history.
The manor and the granary. Medieval Europe organized scarcity through the manor. A lord owned the land, the mill, and the court. Peasants got protection and subsistence in exchange for rent, labor, and loyalty. Imperial China organized scarcity through the granary. A dynasty that let its people starve lost the Mandate of Heaven.
Two civilizations, two reflexes. Private lords who owe you protection. Or a central state that owes you food. AI does not erase these templates. It industrializes them.
America has rehearsed the manor for two centuries. America tells itself it was founded against aristocracy. Its economic history disagrees. The plantation. The company town. Sharecropping, which rebuilt bondage as a rent relationship within a decade of abolition. Every time capital concentrated, the American answer was not distribution. Now add AI. Labor's share collapses and the owners of compute capture the surplus. The one escape, a universal transfer funded by taxing that surplus, requires Congress to tax the class that funds Congress. It will not happen. A country that could not pass universal healthcare in a century will not pass universal income in a decade of crisis. What arrives instead is protection in exchange for dependence. China has rehearsed the granary for two thousand years. The Communist Party did not invent Chinese statecraft. It inherited it. There are no elections to launder legitimacy through procedure. Performance is the only legitimacy the party has ever had. Mass unemployment in Washington is a policy debate. Mass unemployment in Beijing is a dynastic emergency.
The machinery is on the shelf. Dibao, the minimum livelihood guarantee, already moves cash to tens of millions of households. The state threads through the banks, the fabs, and the AI champions, so the surplus sits within reach of the treasury. And when a private lord grows too tall, the state cuts him down in public. Ask Jack Ma. Common prosperity was not a slogan. It was a warning shot. When AI hollows out Chinese labor, the party will route the surplus into household transfers. Chinese UBI will not arrive as welfare. It will arrive as dynasty maintenance. The granary, rebuilt in silicon.
The middle paths are closed. Every hybrid outcome requires one of these countries to betray its own power structure. American UBI means taxing the lords, and the lords own the legislature. Chinese feudalism means tolerating rival sovereigns, and the party exists to prevent rival sovereigns. Under stress, nations do not become pragmatic. They become more themselves.
The republic born in revolt against inherited power will hand its children lords. The civilization that never held an election will hand its children bread. Freedom without bread, or bread without freedom. History already voted.
